Lonely Planet Adds Best Value to Its Annual Best in Travel Lists

Forget New York or Florida, see why tourists may soon be flocking to Montana, after a global travel leader named it a top destination.

To mark its 50th anniversary, Lonely Planet has added two new categories to its annual list of trending travel destinations. According to a press release, the global travel authority’s Best in Travel 2024 hot list includes Best Value and Best Sustainable destinations, in addition to its usual round-up of the top ten best cities, countries, and regions.

Spain tops the sustainable travel list, according to the announcement, “having taken enormous strides to boost off-season travel, expand renewable energy, spread visitors across the year, and bring tourism to previously overlooked destinations.”

For those looking to get the most bang for the travel buck, look no further than the U.S. Midwest. It was ranked number one on the Best Value list. Lonely Planet also recommends Algeria, the Greek Island of Ikaria and Normandy, France for cost-conscious travelers, calling attention to these often-overlooked destinations.

Rounding out the Best Value list are Poland, Nicaragua, Danube Limes in Bulgaria and Romania, Egypt, the Southern Lakes and Central Otago in New Zealand, and the night trains of Europe.

For travelers looking to stay closer to home, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Kansas City, Missouri, and Montreal, Quebec, Canada, were all on the Best Cities list and Big Sky Country in Montana was named to the Best Regions list.
