Not surprisingly, warm weather destinations are among the many places Americans will be traveling to this winter. Newsweek just released an article summing up the results of TripAdvisor’s Winter Travel Index. The report revealed that 57 percent of Americans were “preparing for winter travel, with 96 percent planning to travel as much as or even more than they did last winter.”
The top domestic destination was New York City, famous for its holiday celebrations from the dazzling storefront holiday windows and ice skating beneath the tree at Rockefeller Center to its infamous New Year’s Eve countdown in Times Square.
Rounding out the top ten cities for U.S. travelers this winter are Las Vegas, Orlando, Honolulu, Key West, New Orleans, Anaheim (California), Chicago, Miami Beach, and Sedona (Arizona).
Sun and sand took top spots for international travel destinations this winter. Cancún was the top pick, followed by Punta Cana (Dominican Republic), Cabo San Lucas, Playa del Carmen, Paris, London, Puerto Vallarta, Palm-Eagle Beach (Aruba), San Juan (Puerto Rico), and Bavaro (Dominican Republic).
The TripAdvisor research also found that 93 percent of travelers plan to spend the same or more than they did last year and 53 percent are increasing their travel budget. According to the market research firm Euromonitor International, global tourism spending is expected to reach a record high, hitting $2 trillion.
