Flight attendants log thousands of hours in the air each year. So when it comes to knowing exactly what to pack to make each flight as comfortable as possible, they are truly the experts. One seasoned veteran recently shared with Yahoo! Life her expert advice on what to bring, especially if you’re over 50. These are five things she always packs:
- Comfortable shoes, preferably slip-on. Not only do slip-ons make it easier (and faster) to go through security, but they are ideal for anyone who likes to take their shoes off during the flight, as there isn’t much room at your seat to bend over and tie up shoes.
- Pillows. The extra support of a pillow can help anyone suffering from back or neck pain. For long trips, a seat cushion can add much-needed comfort, especially if you have lower back or sciatic pain.
- Extra layer. A cardigan or light jacket can help keep you warm on heavily air-conditioned flights. Another recommendation is to bring a versatile blanket scarf, which you can cuddle up in during a long flight. For women, this can provide an added fashion statement at your destination.
- Hand-held fan. On the flip side, sometimes it’s easy to overheat while traveling. A small fan, preferably a rechargeable one, can help keep you cool and comfortable.
- Reusable water bottle. The National Council on Aging says dehydration is a concern for older adults and it’s easy to get dehydrated on a flight, especially an overnight flight when you may be sleeping most of the time. An added benefit is refilling your water bottle will save you money over buying bottled water at the airport or your destination.
