There’s a new trend in travel, but its concept is not so new. According to an article in Good Housekeeping, an increasing number of travelers are now seeking “quietcations.” Vacationers are seeking “off-the-grid” spots that allow them to unplug in “meaningful and transformative” ways, often doing away with digital devices for at least part of the time.
There are scientific studies that back the health benefits of a digital detox. The article notes that “studies have shown that cutting back on screen time can lower levels of cortisol (the primary stress hormone), leading to feeling calmer.” Additionally, vacationers often report that they do not return to their old phone habits, of excessive use, after they return home.
While there are resorts around the world now catering to travelers seeking to escape it all, there are ways to turn any trip into a quietcation. The article suggests you:
- Leave your phone in the room
- Go somewhere with limited Wi-Fi
- Resist overscheduling
- End your trip on a low-key note
