Travelers looking to save money without sacrificing their experience are seeking “destination dupes.” According to MarketWatch, a “destination dupe” is a lesser-known locale that is culturally and geographically similar to a popular tourist getaway without the crowds and pricey accommodations.

The article cites a summer travel survey by Bank of America that found 92 percent of travelers say they are open to the idea of visiting an alternative locale that will give the same experience as a popular tourist destination.

Additionally, these lesser-known locations often provide a more relaxed, low-stress vacation experience. They’re great for anyone looking to escape heavy crowds and avoid tourist traps.

The article says there’s a dupe for almost every destination. For example, instead of Santorini, try the island of Paros. Not only is it less crowded, but it’s much less expensive as well. Berat, Albania, makes a great substitute for Tuscany. Montreal or Quebec City can give similar vibes to Paris, without needing to travel overseas.
