In July, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said airline passengers no longer needed to take off their shoes at TSA security screening checkpoints. It seems another big change – one that passengers have been clamoring for years – could be next.
According to an article by The Hill, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has hinted that changes could soon be coming to the size of liquid containers allowed for passengers boarding flights in the United States.
Currently, passengers can only bring liquids, creams, gels, and pastes under 3.4 ounces on board the plane, and they must fit in a clear quart-size bag. Anything larger must be packed in checked luggage. If this so-called 3-1-1 rule is lifted, travelers will be allowed to bring full-size shampoo bottles, toothpaste tubes, perfumes, and more in their carry-on luggage.
Secretary Noem says her department is talking to several companies with technologies to better screen liquids and gels, relieving the need to limit their size. She assures that no change will be made unless it is safe, stating that TSA needs to put in place a “multi-layered screening process that allows us to change some of how we do security and screening so it is still safe.”
