The calendar may say October, but travel experts warn that time is running out to score good fares on holiday travel flights. Travel guru Brian Kelly, a.k.a. “The Points Guy”, told Good Morning America that when it comes to booking airline tickets, timing is everything.
He said that while there are many fall travel bargains to be found, prices increase around the holidays. He said the average domestic ticket during the holidays is over $600 and more than $1200 for international flights.
Kelly says early October is the time to book Thanksgiving flights. If your holiday plans require a flight at Christmas time, then you should buy your tickets in the first week of November.
If your schedule is flexible, consider leaving in the morning on a less popular travel day and returning later on the Monday post-holiday. Kelly says that it can help save “almost half” on airfare. Flying on the actual holiday, for example, Thanksgiving Thursday, can save money as well.
Travel experts also recommend using technology to your advantage and setting alerts that will notify you if the flight price drops.
Kelly warns that procrastinating on holiday travel is never a good idea. He says if you start seeing airfare prices increase, they typically keep going up. So be sure to book when you see an airfare that fits your budget.
