If you’re not flying first class, you might not think it matters where you sit on an airplane. But that’s far from true.

As Travel & Leisure explains, there is a perfect seat depending on your travel style. There seems to be a consensus among professional travelers that before you choose a seat, you should decide what traits are most important to you: personal space, ability to recline, or privacy.

Here are their recommendations on where to sit depending upon your priorities:

A seat in the middle of the plane is best if you want a quiet experience. Try to avoid the rear because you will hear noise from the galley, and passengers tend to congregate near the lavatories (toilets).

The front of the plane is best if you are in a hurry. If you have a tight connection, it might be wise to select a seat towards the front so you can be among the first to exit.

The back of the plane is preferred by travelers who want to stretch out. There are generally fewer passengers who choose to sit at the back of the plane. If you do not recline your seat, experts recommend choosing the last row because with no one behind you, no feet are encroaching into your legroom space.

A window seat is perfect for anyone who wants to sleep because you can lean against the window. This may come in handy if you have an early morning or an overnight flight.

Passengers with long legs aren’t the only ones who pick an aisle seat. It’s also suggested for anyone who knows they will need to get up to use the lavatory, or just get up and walk around, during the flight.

Nervous flyers should select a seat in the middle of the plane near the wings because you are less likely to feel turbulence in that spot.

With so many airlines charging for seating assignments, hopefully, this list will help you get the best bang for your buck.
