Years ago, it was always cheaper to book a round-trip flight. Of course, that’s back when you used to have to stay over a Saturday night to score the cheapest tickets. Times have changed. Now it’s not always advantageous to book round-trip. A HuffPost travel report discovered that sometimes two one-way flights are a better deal.
When flying domestically – within the United States – there is often no difference in pricing. Travel experts say airlines typically price a one-way ticket at half the cost of a round-trip ticket. However, by booking one-way flights you can travel on different airlines allowing you to pick the cheapest ticket for each leg of the trip. That means taking one airline for your outbound flight and a different one for your return trip.
One-way tickets are also ideal when you have a complex itinerary, such as flying into one city and home from another.
However, when booking international flights – out of the United States – experts say it is almost always better to book round-trip. One-way tickets typically cost way more than half the cost of a round-trip ticket. In fact, the HuffPost reporter found that on a New York to Paris itinerary chosen to test this information, two one-way tickets cost almost three-times as much as the round-trip.
