If your passport has expired or is about to, there’s good news. Now you can renew your passport online. It’s fast and hassle-free.

According to Travel Off Path, it takes only a few minutes to fill out the passport renewal form on the U.S. Department of State’s website, upload a digital photo and pay the fee. Your new passport should arrive in the mail in about six to nine weeks.

This sure beats the traditional way of renewing a passport, where you had to physically go to a passport office — only after you already went to a pharmacy or other location that offered passport photography services.

Online renewals are not available to everyone, but if you live in the United States, are over age 25, and your last passport was valid for at least 10 years, and you physically have your passport (you will need to provide your passport number, issue date, and expiration date), then you should qualify to renew your passport online.

Start by creating a MyTravelGov account. Within 24 hours you should receive an email with a link to “Renew Passport”. Simply fill out the application, follow the instructions on how to attach a digital photo (they provide detailed guidelines on how to take the picture), and pay the processing fee. Then simply sit back and wait for your new passport to arrive in the mail.
