The lines at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) are probably extra-long these days as Americans rush to get a Real ID before the May 7, 2025, deadline. Starting that day, you will need a Real ID to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities and nuclear power plants.

WBTV in Charlotte, North Carolina, reports that many DMVs are increasing hours to accommodate people scrambling to secure a Real ID-compliant state-issued driver’s license or identification card.

To determine if you have a Real ID, look at the upper right corner of your driver’s license. It should have a star, a star within a circle, or, if you live in California, a bear with a star on it.

Enhanced Driver’s Licenses (EDL) issued by Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, and Vermont will also be accepted for official REAL ID purposes.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Congress passed the REAL ID Act in 2005, following the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation that the Federal Government “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver’s licenses and identification cards.” It believes that secure driver’s licenses and identification documents are a vital component of our national security framework.

Beginning May 7, travelers who do not present a Real ID will not be allowed through the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security checkpoint. If you do not have a Real ID, it is advised that you get one ASAP, but you can use a U.S. Passport as a valid form of identification when flying.
