The One Thing Every Traveler Will Soon Need When Flying

Time is running out to get the one thing you will need for all future flights within the United States. We’ll explain.

Starting on May 7, 2025, all U.S. travelers must have a Real ID to fly domestically – or a passport. The change was supposed to have started in May 2023 but was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Real ID is basically a super secure driver’s license or ID card. According to a story by CBS News, “The Real ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, establishes minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses, permits, and ID cards.”

The easiest way to determine if you have a Real ID is to look for a star marking in the top right corner. Some states including Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington use Enhanced Driver’s Licenses (EDL) that feature a flag marking. These also meet Real ID standards.

If you do not have a Real ID or EDL, you should probably do that sooner than later. The TSA will not let passengers fly without one starting May 7 of next year.

The article notes that all U.S. states are issuing Real ID cards through their driver’s licensing agencies. It suggests visiting the Department of Homeland Security’s Real ID website to learn more about what’s required in your state and what documents you will need to bring to your appointment. Typically, you will need your Social Security card, proof of citizenship, and proof of residence.

By the way, a Real ID is not just for flying. This official document will also be required to access certain federal facilities or to enter nuclear power plants.
