Cruises are not just for vacation anymore. A growing number of people are opting to spend a good portion of their retirement at sea.

According to an article by USA Today, cruising has become a popular lifestyle choice for seniors. It cites a State of the Cruise Industry Report by the Cruise Lines International Association, which found that last year, “17 percent of cruise travelers were between 50 and 59, while 18 percent were between 60 and 69.”

It seems seniors are choosing to spend a portion of their retirements on cruise ships for a few key reasons:

  • The “floating hotel” format allows guests to unpack just once and still see multiple destinations
  • For older travelers with mobility limitations, cruises can also be an accessible way to see the world
  • Cruises are often more affordable than other types of vacation; the article points out that it can be more cost-effective to do a transatlantic cruise than to take a flight

And for travelers who cruise a lot, once you reach loyalty status with a cruise line, you may be rewarded with perks such as free laundry service, complimentary drinks, or priority boarding.
