Let’s face it, travel can be stressful. Seniors may find it especially challenging to navigate busy airport terminals and full flights. But that doesn’t mean you need to put away your suitcase and resolve to stay home. USA Today has come up with a list of suggestions to take the stress out of travel for seniors, but these tips will benefit travelers of any age.
Get there early. Despite the trend of influencers testing the “airport theory” and getting to their gate with just minutes to spare, you should plan on getting to the airport early – ideally 90 minutes to two hours before your flight. And if you have a connection, make sure you leave plenty of time in case your first flight is delayed or you have to change terminals.
Plan ahead. If you’re not a frequent flyer or you’re at an airport you are not familiar with, take some time to look up a terminal map to know where you are going and what amenities are nearby. It’s also a good idea to look up the plane configuration so you know you are selecting a seat that is desirable for your needs.
Pack wisely. Make sure any medications you need for your trip are easily accessible in your carry-on bag. Experts suggest seniors “travel with a printed medication list because if you unexpectedly run out or lose something or need something, then you have all that information right there.”
Ask for assistance. If you have mobility issues, you can arrange for a wheelchair and attendant, or shuttle, at the airport to get you to your gate.
Embrace electronics. Become familiar with the airline app before your trip. If your flight is delayed or cancelled, this will help you reschedule more easily and faster than trying to find a customer service representative. The app will also let you check in for your flight and access your boarding pass, so you do not need to find a computer and printer.
