Travelers seeking tranquility may want to consider a trip to our neighbor to the north. According to an article by Travel & Leisure, two popular vacation destinations in western Canada have ranked among the world’s best spots for serenity seekers.
The list of 36 peaceful vacation destinations around the world was compiled by Travelbag, a travel planning company based in the United Kingdom. The metrics used consider “the quality of green spaces, the level of noise and light pollution, local congestion levels, and overall cleanliness.”
With its pristine turquoise lakes and breathtaking views of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, Banff, Alberta, took the number three spot, in a tie with Kyoto, Japan, and Cairns, Australia. Banff was noted for its outstanding green spaces and cleanliness. Located within Banff National Park, it offers easy access to extensive hiking trails, waterfalls, and glaciers, and is a part of the scenic Icefields Parkway.
Another Canadian mountain town took the number 4 spot on the list. Whistler, British Columbia, is home to one of North America’s largest ski resorts, Whistler Blackcomb. The article says it earned a perfect score for the quality of its parks and green spaces, its exceptional nature, and outdoor offerings. Aside from skiing, the town of Whistler is worth a visit for its quaint pedestrian-only village and laid-back energy.
If you’re willing to travel farther, Travelbag gave its highest ranking overall to Queensland, New Zealand. Three Australian destinations ranked in the top ten, with Cairns near the Great Barrier Reef tied for third, the Gold Coast at No. 7, and Sydney at No. 9.
