The travel experts at Expedia have come up with a Top Ten list of “destination dupes” for travelers looking to visit popular vacation spots without spending big bucks or dealing with large crowds. According to the company’s Trends in Travel report, “dupes” are destinations that are “a little unexpected, sometimes more affordable, but every bit as delightful as the tried-and-true places travelers love.”
One U.S. city made the curated list of alternatives to top tourist destinations with Memphis being named as a dupe for Nashville, Tennessee.
Saying that “Memphis is to blues and soul what Nashville is for country music,” Expedia recommends visiting the Stax Museum of American Soul Music (where Otis Redding and Isaac Hayes recorded some of their biggest hits), Sun Studio (where B.B. King and Elvis Presley were discovered), and Beale Street (commonly called the “Home of the Blues”). And, of course, no visit to Memphis would be complete without sampling its famous barbeque.
The other cities making the destination dupes list are:
Paros (Greece) for Santorini
Perth (Australia) for Sydney
Liverpool (United Kingdom) for London
Palermo (Sicily) for Lisbon (Portugal)
Curacao for St. Martin (Caribbean)
Quebec City (Canada) for Geneva (Switzerland)
Pattaya (Thailand) for Bangkok
Taipai (Taiwan) for Seoul (South Korea)
Sapporo (Japan) for Zermatt (Switzerland)
