Packing for a trip no longer means counting out enough pairs of underwear for each day you will be away – and an extra pair, just in case – and choosing the perfect outfits. Today’s traveler needs many items you can’t even wear.

Additionally, with airlines charging high prices for checked bags, plus the likelihood of your suitcase getting lost, many passengers are vowing to travel using strictly carry-on luggage. This can make packing a challenge.

MSN shared an article by Southern Living listing nine items you will want to put in your carry-on for your next trip:

  1. Back-up Power – you need to stay connected, especially when traveling, and you can’t always rely on finding a working charging port so be sure to bring an external battery or power bank for your phone.
  2. Medicine – Be sure to keep your prescriptions – and any over-the-counter medicines you rely on – with you at all times.
  3. Glasses or Contact Lenses – Vision correction would be difficult to replace if away from home, so make sure to keep your glasses and contacts with you when you travel. Even if you exclusively wear contacts, be sure to have a pair of glasses with you incase you have issues with your eyes.
  4. Lip Balm – The dry air on an airplane can cause chapped lips so keep this handy.
  5. Extra Layer – The air conditioning on an airplane can be quite cold, so keep an extra sweater or jacket with you. A small blanket is another option to help keep you warm during your travels.
  6. GPS Tracker – A tracking device, such as the Apple AirTag, can help you locate your property if it gets lost or stolen.
  7. Headphones – These are needed if you want to enjoy the in-flight entertainment, but it’s also polite to use headphones when talking on your phone.
  8. Hand Sanitizer – Germs are everywhere. While handwashing is the best, hand sanitizer can help in a pinch to make sure you are not putting germy hands near your face, especially when eating. It’s also smart to use anti-bacterial wipes to sanitize your seat and tray table area.
  9. Pen – You will need a pen to fill out immigration and customs forms if traveling internationally. Plus, it’s a good idea to keep one handy in case you need to write down directions or notes.
