Traveling more is often a top priority for retirees. One recent survey showed that nearly two-thirds of Americans over the age of 50 plan on traveling this year.
But traveling as a senior can have some challenges. Fortunately, Conde Nast Traveler rounded up some top tips from experienced travelers. Here are ten suggestions from well-traveled retirees that you should keep in mind during your next vacation.
- Time Management – Time is one thing retirees have in abundance. Take advantage of this by planning trips to popular destinations during the off-season. You’ll find smaller crowds and better prices.
- Slow Down – Don’t try to cram too much into your itinerary. There’s something to be said for quality over quantity, especially when visiting new places.
- Learn the Lingo – Try to learn a few key words in the language of the countries you are visiting.
- Utilize the Hotel Concierge – Reach out before you arrive. They can arrange dinner reservations and tour tickets, often helping you get a better price and experience.
- Talk to the Bartender – Similarly, strike up a conversation with the friendly bartender. As a local, they can provide great recommendations for restaurants and off-the-beaten-path things to see and do.
- Book Your Own Excursions – When cruising, look for a private tour with a local guide. You can tailor it to your interests and get a more authentic experience without a busload of fellow passengers.
- Pack Your Own Paper – Savvy travelers bring along a stash of toilet paper. It’s not always available in public restrooms when you’ve got to go.
- Extend Your Layover – Sometimes you can squeeze in a few sites or sample some delicacies in an extra destination if you have a long enough layover. Consider it a bonus!
- Location, Location, Location – Pay attention to where your hotel is located. This is one area where trying to save money could backfire on you. Seek accommodations in a central location.
- Just Go – Remember, “there’s no time like the present” and “tomorrow isn’t promised.”
