With post-pandemic travel rebounding, there has been an increase in cases of colds, flus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and norovirus (a.k.a. the stomach bug). According to Outside magazine, that makes sense considering you’re exposed to more people and more germs. To help keep you healthy next time you travel, consider these five tips:

Pick the window seat – Researchers for a study funded by Boeing found that airplane passengers were more likely to catch a virus if seated in an area with more interaction, such as an aisle seat or near the bathroom. The scientists observed that people who sat by the window got up from their seat the least, limiting their exposure to germs.

Keep your hands away from your mouth, nose and eyes – Studies found that people touch their face as much as 23 times an hour. Try not to touch or rub your mouth, eyes or nose unless you know your hands are clean, as these are prime entry points for germs. If you don’t have access to a sink to wash up, use hand sanitizer.

Clean surfaces with a sanitizing wipe – This tip goes hand-in-hand with the last one. Germs, such as those for influenza A and B viruses, can survive on nonporous surfaces for 24-28 hours. When flying, use anti-bacterial sanitizing wipes to clean seat belts and the tray table. It’s also a good idea to use them on high touch points in your hotel room, such as light switches, door handles and the remote control.

Take care of yourself – Be sure to eat a balanced diet, stay hydrated and get plenty of sleep to ensure your immune system is primed to fight off anything you may be exposed to. Doctors say it’s important to provide your body with the nutrients and energy needed to stimulate immune cell activity.

Be prepared – If you do get sick, be sure to seek medical help. It’s best to do your research before you go away to find a travel clinic at your destination.
