As air travel continues to experience flight delays and cancellations, not to mention all the lost luggage, it’s more important than ever to make sure you pack your carry-on bag wisely. USA Today compiled a list of what it considers to be seven essential travel items you will want to have with you.
- Extra change of clothes – If you get to your destination but your suitcase does not, or your flight gets delayed or canceled and you end up sleeping at the airport, you will be glad to have a complete change of clothes with you (including undergarments).
- Toothbrush – You will need this if your luggage is lost or delayed, plus it’s always nice to freshen up after you’ve been snacking or eating airport food.
- Portable charger – Outlets and charging ports are scarce in most airports. Always travel with a fully charged portable battery pack. This will ensure you can stay connected to let loved ones know of your travel status or contact the airline should you need to be rebooked onto a different flight.
- Medication – The TSA recommends you carry all of your medication with you when you travel, either in your personal item or carry-on bag, ensuring you have it should your bag be delayed or lost.
- Reusable water bottle – It’s important to stay hydrated, especially when flying. There’s no need to buy an overpriced bottle of water at the airport when you can bring your own water bottle. Just make sure it is empty when you go through security. Many airports even have water bottle filling stations.
- Sweater or blanket – Comfort is key. Airports and airplanes can be quite chilly. Make sure you have a sweater, sweatshirt, or small blanket to help keep you warm. A cozy blanket or pillow can make a world of difference should your travel plans be disrupted.
- Headphones or earbuds – You will want to bring along your own headphones or earbuds to enjoy the in-flight entertainment. If your flight is delayed, these will help tune out all the airport noise and let you relax in comfort and quiet while you wait.
These items will not prevent a delay, but they’ll definitely make your travel day more enjoyable and, hopefully, a bit less stressful. It’s also a good idea to place a tracker in your checked luggage so you can locate your suitcase should it be misplaced or delayed.
