Don’t Assume Travel Insurance Covers Everything

Travel insurance protects your vacation investment, but it doesn’t cover everything. Here’s what you need to know.

Travel is expensive these days. That’s why experts recommend you purchase travel insurance. In addition to protecting the cost of your travel investment – whether that be the cost of a cruise, airfare, hotel stays, etc. – it also covers costs due to unforeseen events, such as medical coverage if you get sick or injured on your trip.

Some of the best travel insurance policies also cover trip delays and cancellations, weather issues, baggage problems, and much more.

Forbes cautions, don’t assume travel insurance covers absolutely everything or every circumstance you might encounter. Coverage varies significantly between policies, especially when it comes to exclusions like pre-existing conditions or certain activities.

The article says it is important for travelers to thoroughly review their policy to ensure it covers their specific needs, whether that’s for adventure activities, medical evacuation, or trip cancellations due to illness.

It’s also wise to make sure you have health insurance benefits while traveling. Not all domestic health insurance policies cover you when outside of the United States. This includes Medicare. Even if your health insurance does offer some international coverage, it may be limited. Travel insurance can provide important supplemental medical coverage when traveling, especially when out of the country.
