When the price of a dozen eggs topped $10, almost everyone started looking for ways to cut costs wherever they could. This extended from the grocery store to the gas station and beyond. For those looking to travel, CNET released a list of five tips to help you save money when booking flights.

Fly mid-week. According to Google Flight data, flights during the early to the middle part of the week can save you 13-to-20 percent on ticket prices compared to Friday, Saturday, or Sunday flights. Tuesday happens to be the most economical day to fly.

Fly a budget airline. Budget airlines can save you big bucks compared to larger airlines, but keep in mind there could be hidden costs. You will likely need to pay extra for conveniences often included on non-budget airlines, such as seat assignments, carry-on baggage, and even an onboard soda.

Book one-way. The days of needing to book a round-trip ticket are long gone. You can often save money by searching for two one-way flights. You can even mix and match airlines this way to maximize savings and, perhaps, get better flight times.

Don’t dismiss a layover. Most travelers prefer a non-stop flight as you are most likely to get to your destination on time. But, according to Google, a flight with a layover could save you about 25 percent.

Use apps to search. Finding the best flight fares is easier if you use apps with software programmed to search out the best deals.
