The unofficial start to summer is just a few days away, so this seems like the perfect time to talk about how and where to beat the heat. Travel & Leisure recently released its list of the 25 Best Beaches in the USA. Whether you’re seeking an oceanside boardwalk or a crystal-clear lake nestled beneath a majestic mountain peak, there’s bound to be a beachside spot for you to include in your summer travel plans.

Here are a few favorites for you to consider:

Ocean City, Maryland – With a white sand beach stretching eight miles long, and a three-mile boardwalk offering amusement park rides, tasty treats and fun shopping, this beloved East Coast beach offers a classic Americana vibe.

Harris Beach, Oregon –This is a nature-lovers paradise with tide pools to explore and playful harbor seals and California sea lions close to shore. You might even catch a glimpse of migrating gray whales.

Oak Street Beach, Chicago, Illinois – Sunbathing is probably not the first thing to come to mind when you think of the Windy City, but this popular beach along the shores of Lake Michigan will surely change your mind.

Santa Monica Beach, California – There’s a reason this beach is so famous. Its iconic pier draws visitors from all over wanting to ride the Ferris wheel and snack on funnel cakes.

Medano Creek, Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado – You will need to act fast if you want to visit this beach. Snowy mountain runoff fills the shallow river every spring and disappears every August.

Ocean Beach Park, New London, Connecticut – If you can’t decide between the beach or the pool, this might be the perfect place for you. There is an Olympic-size pool just steps from the sugar-sand beach.

Coney Island Beach, Brooklyn, New York – The boardwalk here is possibly more famous than the beach. Coney Island is home to the original Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs, which hosts an annual hot dog eating contest every Fourth of July.
