There’s a reason our country is known as America the Beautiful. From “the purple mountains majesties” and “amber waves of grain” as quoted in the song by the same name, it’s easy to understand what makes a road trip through this beautiful country so appealing.
In celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, Observer has named what it considers to be the five best road trips stretching from “sea to shining sea.”
Jackson Hole, Wyoming – The reporter vividly recounts the awe of first spotting the amazing expanse of the snow-packed Rocky Mountains as you drive to Teton National Park. Here, “the land retains the spirit of a bygone era—the last of the Old West.”
Pacific Coast Highway, California – This 650-mile route stretches from north of San Francisco to the sun-kissed beaches of Orange County. As you travel through the Golden State, you’ll take in “sweeping coastal views along the Pacific: the jagged cliffs, hazy marine layer, golden beaches, and dense forests.”
Arctic wilderness, Alaska – One of the best ways to enjoy the land of the Midnight Sun is a drive through the Alaskan wilderness. Travelers will marvel at the natural beauty and “rich cultural history of the indigenous people.” Keep your eyes open by day to spot wildlife and at night for a glimpse of the Northern Lights.
Coastal Maine – There’s a reason Maine’s nickname is Vacationland. From the rugged coastlines dotted with quaint resort towns to the dense forests closer to the Canadian border, this state is worth a visit. Be sure to bring an appetite and sample the legendary lobster rolls and blueberry pie.
Polynesian paradise, Hawaii – The article says arriving in the Hawaiian Islands feels like you’ve stepped into another world. Its rich “Polynesian heritage persists in the food, culture, style, and customs across all seven inhabited islands.”
