If your idea of traveling is getting a true “flavor” for the city you’re visiting, you might want to start visiting local farmers markets.

Travel & Leisure suggests you go beyond the traditional tourist sites and check out a farmers market if you want a true taste of the area. They allow you to explore and sample local, seasonal produce and delicacies while meeting the growers and makers themselves.

The reporter recommends visiting farmers markets to sample regional fresh produce, homemade goods, and specialty prepared food and drinks, stating: “To me, it’s just as integral, if not more so, to explore a city’s landmarks as it is to trace the pace of local life by visiting its farmers markets.”

Beyond getting a better taste for your vacation destination, farmers markets are a wonderful place to buy unique souvenirs that are more meaningful than the magnets and t-shirts typically marketed to tourists.
