You don’t need a fancy camera to take high quality pictures. A professional travel photographer believes the day is coming when your iPhone camera will replace the DSLR camera. She shared with Travel & Leisure her tips and tricks to taking amazing travel photos using just your cell phone.

Learn the basics of composition. It’s more important to understand how to compose a photo than to have all sorts of fancy equipment. The professional travel photographer recommends shooting around sunset or sunrise — the so-called “golden hour” — to capture images in the most ideal light. It’s also good to learn composition techniques such as leading lines, negative space, symmetry, and the rule of thirds.

Practice makes perfect. Take pictures of the people and places around you. Unlike the days of film cameras, you can take practically unlimited photos on your phone. Don’t be afraid to capture your favorite sights and memories. The more you practice the better you’ll get.

Learn to edit. Even if your pictures are not perfect, you can work wonders with editing software — much of it built right into your smart phone. Additionally, apps such as Lightroom Mobile and Touch Retouch are quick and easy to use allowing you to “clean up” your photos just like the professionals do.
